Group Five Brings Flamingo Flock to NFRMC

Area commuters were surprised to pass a flock of 500 flamingos alongside Newberry Road yesterday. The plastic birds with “Standing Up to Breast Cancer” plaques are displayed around North Florida Regional Medical Center’s (NFRMC) duck pond as part of an experiential campaign promoting breast cancer awareness.

Physicians, nurses, survivors and families placed them in the yard as part of the campaign kickoff leading into National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

NFRMC is selling the birds for $20 each to raise funds for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Supporters place them in their own yards to spread the message throughout the community. Additionally, they photograph themselves with their flamingo to upload to NFRMC’s Facebook page.

As flamingos are sold, their absence from the hospital’s lawn serves as a visual representation of the impact we’re having in the fight against breast cancer. Even with the flamingos gone, an eye-catching reminder remains. Group Five constructed a 100-foot pink ribbon of floating inner tubes in the hospital’s pond.
